Just a mile or so northwest of England’s brewing capital, Burton, Rolleston is easily reached via the nearby A50 cross-country route or the A38 running from the edge of the Birmingham conurbation to Derby and beyond. The village was reputedly settled in the 7th century, and still has several ancient elements to it including a pub which may well date back to the 11th century, and the 13th century church of St Mary’s, though an earlier incarnation predated that pub. For several centuries the Mosley family of Oswald fame (or infamy) were lords of the manor. The railway came to Rolleston in 1848, though until 1894 it didn’t actually take passengers, and closed during the 1960s: a legacy in the form of a nature trail along the man-made valley built for the line is not a bad swap. Academics and historians argue about the origin of the village name, said to be a corruption of either Rudolf’s toun (farmstead) which would make it a Saxon foundation from before the Danelaw; or Hrodwulf’s toun, making it Scandinavian. Victorian and Edwardian, and later post-war development expanded the village, increasing the population to the current level of approximately 3500. In addition to the usual village amenities of several pubs and a few shops, Rolleston’s thriving community life means it has a cricket club and several other social centres, and its location provides riverside and brookside frontage hard to equal in Staffordshire.
