Penkridge is a Market town set on the River Penk, surrounded by beautiful countryside, home to over seven thousand people. It links far back in time, and was famed for it's farming and cattle auction, and nearby horse fair. There's a 12th Century Church dedicated to St Michael, and a closer look uncovers the old cells and Stocks in the centre of town. Just a few miles away will share an intriguing insight into Staffordshire Castle, the Norman Motte and Bailey Fortress dates back centuries, time it right and the Open Air Theatre brings Shakespeare to life. For architecture of a different kind The Ancient High House is a Tudor wonder, with captivating rooms, and the Staffordshire Yeomanry Museum. Or for Roman splendour, where else but Letocetum Roman Baths and Museum which has an interesting tale to tell. For a dash of grandiose houses there's the Shugborough Estate where the costumed guides unveil the Mansion House and Servants Quarters, or possibly Boscobel House with it's stunning black and white facade will be first choice, as Charles II hid from Oliver Cromwell's army here after the Battle of Worcester. Animal lovers are remembered with Mottley Meadows National Nature Reserve, or be prepared to be amazed at the Museum of Cannock Chase, where domestic life and coal mining springs to life.
