Lying close to the River Churnet the town of Leek in Staffordshire is a pretty little town on the edge of the Peak District. Economically it has throughout its history relied on farming and textiles, in the 18th century it principal manufacturing industries were connected with the silk trade and products from here included buttons, swing silk, ribbons and handkerchiefs. Leek is built on the slopes and top of a hill amidst some of the most picturesque moor and dale scenery and it is for this reason that it is known as “The Queen of the Moorlands”. Long linked with the textile industry there are interesting buildings and architecture that remain today as part of this towns heritage. It has enjoyed a long history as a market town and today it still holds regular markets in the town. Leek is one of those places that holds your interest, the town centre has a number of traditional shops and stores and if you can stand the steep walk you will be rewarded with the sight of some interesting features, a mix of architectural styles each providing a snapshot of the growth of this town through history. For those who are visiting Leek, it is an ideal location in which to base your trips into the surrounding countryside or if you prefer to enjoy the town and all it has to offer – but remember those streets can be quite steep!
