Cannock is to be found North of Walsall and South of Stafford with Lichfield to the East and is easily accessed from the A34. Whilst Cannock is not mentioned in the Domesday Book it was, during the reign of King John (1167 -1216), a substantial village and there is a story that there was a castle in the area although there is no evidence of this today. Close by was – and is – Cannock Chase 1214 hectares of open heathland that was, as the name suggests, an area used as a medieval royal hunting forest. Today Cannock Chase is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on which wild deer can still be seen. The Chase is an area that attracts visitors from all over the country who come to enjoy the heathland and woodlands that make up this reserve. In the 1600’s an iron foundry was established in the area, one of the first and today Cannock is still leading the way, it is considered to be one of the fastest growing areas in the West Midlands home to a number of regional, national and international companies. At the heart of the town centre residents of Cannock enjoy a wide variety of stores and shops. For those who wish to take their leisure seriously then there is the Prince of Wales Theatre in the town centre, there is the Museum of Cannock Chase on the site of the former Valley Colliery and for the more energetic there is the local leisure centre with its two pools and other facilities and of course Cannock Chase itself.
