Burslem is a fascinating Market town positioned in the Fowlea Valley in Staffordshire, and is home to over twenty two thousand people. The town dates back centuries and from its humble beginnings of a small agricultural settlement the town thrived. It's renowned for its ceramic production over the centuries, and has been home to some of the world's leading names, including Moorcroft, Doulton, Burleigh, and perhaps the best known Wedgewood. Josiah Wedgewood was born in Burslem in 1730, and later opened his first factory whilst still a young man in the 18th Century, a legacy of which remains today. The Trent and Mersey Canal arrived to transport the steel and pottery produced to various destinations although today brightly coloured narrow boats are the order of the day. A stroll around the town will uncover the Victorian splendour of the centre where imposing Victorian, and elegant Edwardian architecture stand side by side, presided over by the impressive Town Hall and its clock tower, and nearby a 19th Century park that's situated off Moorland Road that has a pavilion, fountains and lake. There's a range of pubs, bars and restaurants to choose from, and a small choice of shops although there is always the colourful Street Market which spreads along Queen Street and St John's Square.
