Minffordd is to be found in the county of Gwynedd in North Wales, just off the A487 in between Porthmadog and Penrhyndeudraeth. Historically it has relied heavily on the railway network. In 1872 the slate industry was at its peak and the railway network was developing as the slate was being transported to Porthmadog and exchange sidings with the Cambrian Railway were built at Minffordd, at one time there was a rail link to Minffordd Quarry. The line remained in use until 1946 when it was abandoned as standard gauge railway lines were proving more efficient. By 1956 the rail service was restored and today the Ffestiniog Railway is thriving recording greater numbers of visitors than ever before. If however you prefer walking then one of the best routes up Cader Idris, the southernmost limit of Snowdonia’s mountains, is from Minffordd – it will take around 4 to 5 hours to complete though! If on the other hand you are planning a trip by train to Portmeirion, the famous Italianate village, then you will take the train to Minffordd which is the closest station. The railway is being continually developed to keep it as one of the most successful tourist attractions in North Wales,
