The town of Llanrwst is situated in the Conwy Valley in North Wales with the River Conay skirting the town. And is a town which is separate from the rest of the UK – the motto for Llanrwst reading “Cymru, Lloegr a Llanrwst!” which translates as Wales. England and Llanrwst! St Grwst Church in the town and is named after a 6th Century saint although the church wasn’t built until the 15th century. It was burnt down and subsequently rebuilt the West Tower and North aisle being typical of the 19th century. The heart of the town is Ancaster Square and close by are the Llanrwst Almshouses that were constructed in the early 17th century and for around four hundred years they were home to the poor of the parish until they were closed in 1967 only to be restored and reopened as a museum of local history in 2002 and is now a Grade II listed building. Llanrwst should be on any tourists map if they are seeking a slice of history or a cream tea – just over the bridge from the town centre- the bridge is a 17th century stone bridge – lies Tu Hwnt i'r Bont. Formerly a courthouse in the 15th century this cottage is now owned by the National Trust and is a tea room where they serve the most mouth watering of cream teas ( the Welsh Rarebit isn’t too bad either!). This little cottage has the dubious distinction of being one of the first places to flood in the area if the river bursts its banks and on the door frame, every time it happens, they mark the where the water was at its highest. Close by is Gwydir Castle – a privately owned Grade I listed building with around 10 acres of gardens and is a good example of a Tudor courtyard house. Close by are the lakes of a Geirionydd and Crafnant which are set in the valleys and offer fabulous views for those energetic enough to explore that bit further.
