The first thing you notice when you arrive at Conwy in North Wales is the mediaeval Castle dominating the town. It stands proud and defiant on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Conwy Estuary, built in the reign of Edward I and once described as “the most magnificent of Edward I's Welsh fortresses” ; when you see it you have to admit he wasn’t wrong. Conwy therefore is the classic walled town, some three quarters of a mile long and with 22 towers it is that impressive. Conwy is steeped in history, located at the head of the Conwy Valley the town has narrow cobbled streets, and plenty of old buildings indicative of its past. The 14th century Church if St Mary and All Saints where some of the building can be dated as far back as 1190. In the High Street is Plas Mawr one of the best preserved Elizabethan townhouses in the UK which is apparently haunted. Alternately you could visit the smallest house in Britain located just off the quayside it is 3.05m x 1.8m. Conwy was in earlier times a thriving port shipping slates from Blaneau Ffestiniog around the world and the fishing fleet was a major influence to the economy of the area. Up until the 19th century there was a ferry to Conwy and then Thomas Telford was commissioned to design and build its famous bridge which echoes the Castle battlements and turrets in the background. The bridge though was eventually superseded, until then Conwy was a well known bottleneck for traffic in the summer months. Nowadays there is a road tunnel under the Estuary which means that traffic no longer has to clog the pretty streets of Conwy. Today Conwy offers visitors and residents alike a wide variety or traditional shops and stores all tied inexorably to its historic past and yet the modern marina with its yachts sits happily alongside the old fishing boats which their catch on the dock side. Conwy is truly a gem of a town either to use as a base to explore the surrounding countryside and shoreline or to simply visit and enjoy in its own right.
