Newtown lies alongside the River Severn and as well as being the largest town in Powys it is famous for two people who arguably changed lives with their ideas. It is here in Newtown that Robert Owen was born and he subsequently went on to establish the Co-Operative Movement which set better working and living standards for workers. Whist Pryce was the founder of Pryce Jones – the world’s first mail order company. However there is more to Newton than this fame, the town is known in Welsh as Drenewydd and was established as a settlement around 1321 so its pedigree within history is well founded. Newton also once boasted around 50 pubs and 6 breweries in the 18th and 19th centuries within the town boundaries and whilst many of the pubs and all of the breweries have all but disappeared there are still a number of excellent establishments in which to sample what is on offer. A notable feature of the town is known locally as the Long Bridge, originally a wooden structure it was the main route out of town, designed in 1826 it was soon decided that it was too narrow and an iron arched footway was added in 1857. Amongst other features of the town there is the Market Hall, during the Second World War this huge building was one of four in the town to store the entire stock of rum for the Navy! There is the Flannel Exchange built in the 1830’s it is possibly the grandest building in the town and in its heyday when not being used for the trade of flannel it was used for concerts, exhibitions and other major local events – today it houses a number of leisure facilities. Even the railway station is worth a visit, built in 1868 it still retains many of its original Gothic features. In short Newtown is one of the most interesting areas and offers a wide variety of activities and its local shops provide a wide assortment of traditional and local shops whilst the town itself is host to a number of events throughout the year. Newtown is certainly a place where the visitor can not only enjoy the local facilities but also take advantage of the surrounding countryside.
