Campbeltown is a large town and former Royal Burgh on the west coast of Argyll and Bute in Scotland, situated at the head of Campbeltown Loch on the Kintyre Peninsular. Campbeltown was founded in 1607 by the 7th Earl of Argyll, previously it had been known as Kinlochkilkerran (head of the Loch by the Kirk of St. Keiran) the ancient town was founded by St. Keiran in the 6th century. The saint had lived on Davaar Island which sits just outside the bay; St Keirans Cave has a 19th century painting of the Crucifixion and can be visited at low tide. Campbeltown is well-know for its whiskey production and still has three single malt whisky distilleries in operation. The town is a popular tourist resort with many shops, places to eat and a selection of holiday accommodation. Historically interesting features include the Campbeltown Cross; a late medieval carved stone-cross dating from 1380, it stands on the waterfront along side the Campbeltown Heritage Centre and museum which occupies the old church on Lorne Street, with exhibitions on local history and the whisky and fishing industries. The Wee Picture House is a small Art Deco cinema and bingo hall purpose built in 1913. There are walks on and around Beinn Ghuilean and Campbeltown plays host to a popular annual Music Festival.
