Appin is a village in the Argyll region of Scotland with Loch Linnhe to the west and impressive mountains inland. Appin is situated south-west of Lochaber on the secluded Appin peninsular in a remote picturesque coastal setting. Appin is famous as the setting for the novel ‘Kidnapped’ by Robert Louis Stevenson Appin was documented in the 17th century for the murder of Colin Campbell of Glenure; with the Appin Stewarts as the prime suspects. Appin is a popular tourist destination with many good restaurants, places to stay and a garden centre in the area. Attractions include the remains of Castle Stalker built c1495 by Duncan Stewart of Appin, the castle sits on a rock island to the north of the village. The Kinlochlaich Gardens at Kinlochlaich House has a beautiful walled garden, spring garden and woodland walk. Activities available in Appin include boat hire, sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing, clay-pigeon shooting and pony-trekking. There are boat-cruses operating on Loch Linnhe and a seaplane excursion to view the scenic area by air. Port Appin has cycle hire and a passenger-only ferry service operating to the neighbouring island of Lismore. The Scottish Sea Life Sanctuary, with amazing sea creatures is in neighbouring Oban along with the well-known Oban Distillery. There are organised driving tours for sight-seeing from Oban to Inverary.
