Educated at Christ Church, Oxford – won Newdigate prize for poetry. His books Modern Painters (1843-60), The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1848) and The Stones of Venice (1851-53) established him as a major art and social critic. Founded The St George’s Guild, the John Ruskin School at Camberwell and the Whitelands College at Chelsea.
