Stewarton is a historic town in East Ayrshire in Scotland situated 5 miles north of Kilmarnock on the Annick Water. The rural town is known as ‘The Bonnet Toun’ and was associated with making bonnets and traditional Scottish head-wear during the 16th century, specialising in manufacturing regimental headgear such as ‘The Tam O’ Shanter’, ‘The Balmoral’ and ‘The Glengarry’. A notable resident was the industrialist David Dale (1739-1840) who was born in Stewarton and went on to pioneer the cotton mills at New Lanark. Surrounded by rolling countryside and impressive heritage, Stewarton is a popular tourist resort ideal for walkers, cyclists, golfers and nature –watchers, the town has holiday accommodation, shops and amenities, cafes, pubs and restaurants, a fitness centre and a choice of golf courses. Nearby attraction include Dean Castle Country Park with 14th century castle and visitor centre set in beautiful countryside with displays of weapons and armour, woodland walks, a tea-room, children’s play area, pets’ corner with aviaries and ponds. The Burns House Museum in Mauchline which was the house Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Bard lived in during his most creative period, the Newmilns dry ski-slope, set among beautiful pine trees and Knockshinnoch Lagoon Nature Reserve, run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust with woodland abundant with local wildlife including birds, otters, butterflies and more.
