Maybole is an ancient market town, once the historic capital of Carrick in South Ayrshire, Scotland, situated 9 miles south of Ayr and 5 miles east of the Firth of Clyde. Maybole received a charter in 1193 and was created a burgh of barony in 1516. Maybole contained the winter residences of many Carrick barons. The town sits amongst natural springs of mineral water including St Helens Well which was thought to contain water with healing powers, the citizens of Maybole were renowned for longevity, and the census in 1799 recorded a school-master who died at age of 104. William and Agnes Burns, parents of Robert Burns came from Maybole. Maybole has a variety of shops and amenities and hotels. The narrow High Street has many fine buildings with many features of antique stateliness, including the grand turreted Maybole Castle built in 1560, once the baronial mansion of the Earls of Cassillis, at the cross stands the Town Hall built in 1887 and nearby is the Parish Church 1808 with a square spire comprising of six steps. Ruins of Mayboles collegiate Church stand at the bottom of John Knox Street dating from 1371. Crossraguel Abbey lays two miles south-west of town; it is well preserved dating c1215.
