Peebles is a historic town in the Borders region of Scotland situated on the north bank of the River Tweed six miles west of the town Innerleithen. Peebles was a Royal Burgh from the reign of David I and there are many historically interesting features throughout including the remains of the St. Andrews Church founded 1195 and the ruins of the Cross Kirk, a Trinitarian friary, founded in 1261. The town is surrounded by beautiful scenery, forests, rivers and rolling hills ideal for walking, cycling, fishing and golfing. Peebles is a popular holiday resort with hotels and a variety of holiday accommodation; it has a spacious High Street with interesting shops, a Theatre and Arts Centre, tea-rooms and a pottery painting café. The Tweeddale Museum and Gallery details the history of the district and the Visitor Centre gives out maps to discover Peebles of foot by following the Historic Town Trail. The Border Abbeys Tour is a driving tour of the Borders exploring the many historic Abbeys including Melrose, Jedburgh and Kelso. The Glentress Forest has been developed for public access and has cycle trails, paths and archaeological monuments including the ramparts of an Iron Age hill-fort and a reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse Peebles hosts the local Highland Games in September each year.
