Born 1802. Died 1871 - Scottish writer and publisher.


Began as bookseller with his brother in Edinburgh. Successful with Chambers’s Edinburgh Journal. In 1832 formed publishing house of W & R Chambers. Edited Chambers Encyclopaedia and The Cyclopaedia of English Literature and wrote many reference books. Other works included Popular Rhymes of Scotland, Scottish Ballads and Songs, and Life and Works of Robert Burns.
