The village of Ewell is to be found in Surrey in the borough of Epsom and Ewell. It lies along the A24 London to Worthing road (although this now bypasses the village via the Ewell Bypass). Ewell is close to the southern boundary of Greater London. Access is readily available to Central London, the M25 and the south coast via the A24 trunk road. Ewell is reasonably convenient for both Gatwick and Heathrow airports (both accessed via the M25). The name Ewell comes from the Old English word meaning river or spring. This is due to the sacred spring at Ewell which has drawn people to the area since Prehistoric times. Many remains have been found in the area from these times. The Romans built the road now known as Stane Street through Ewell. The Roman road ran all the way from London to Chichester. In 1538 King Henry VIII established Nonsuch Palace to the North East of the village of Ewell. Nonsuch Palace is considered by many to be the greatest of King Henry VIII's building projects but was demolished during the 17th century. However nearby Nonsuch Mansion was built later to a design resembling the original palace and is still to be found in Nonsuch Park.
