Surrey Reports
County Review by Nick on August 12th, 2008Although Surrey is small and has 'lost' lots of territory to London, it still retains much unspoilt countryside and a true rural feel. It is indeed a county of some contrast with sprawling suburbs to the north and rolling farmland and countryside to the south, east and west.
The area has long been important to kings (saxon kings were crowned at Kingston), Lords (lets not forget that the Magna Carta was signed at Runnymede) and, more recently, Captains of industry and a lot of it is prime stockbroker belt land.
Guildford in the west is a vibrant but small city with superb shopping facilities, a castle, the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and lots of things to do down by the River Wey. Farnham with its castle and keep and super Georgian High St is also a good place to base your self.
Moving eastwards along the downs the landscape changes to green fields, picturesque villages, market towns and bubbling streams and brooks. There are delightful churches and buildings at Shere, Gomshall, Ripley and Abinger - all well served by local pubs and excellent walks.
As we move along the downs we come to Ranmore, leith Hill (the highest point in south east england) and Box Hill where the proliferation of trees atop the hills afford marvellous views and nestled below the three lies Dorking - another market town with a massive history (and vineyard!) and used as a base by Dickens (and the Romans)
Southern Surrey is really just a collection of villages with no major settlement making it perfect for a leisurely break - the south coast is also easily accessible from here - as is Gatwick Airport.
To the east lie towns such as Redhill, Reigate, Horley and Caterham - all of which have grown beyond recognition in the last 30 years.
There are many fine golf courses (wentworth for instance) across the county, walking and riding opportunities beyond compare and a wealth of other activities for the outdoors enthusiast....perfect really! County Review by hank on January 25th, 2006
we are from st louis in the usa and we visited surrey for a holiday last year. we had been to the UK before (london 3 times ? 5{ close to the city but see a bit more of england. surrey was delightful, really quite rural in areas and there was plenty of history and heritage to view. we stayed in dorking which is a neat market town surrounded by lovely hills to walk.

I was born and raised at Read Road Lower Ashtead. I spent the first 19 years of my life there, if I could turn back the clock I would choose Ashtead as my ideal place to live. I have lived in England, Australia, Canada and now America, Ashtead is my choice of a safe, quiet and comfortable to live, I know it has probably changed a lot since I was last there in 1989, but it would still be my choice of places to live. Went to the tavern with my boyfriend had a lovely meal. the atmosphere was great, wonderful customer service and brilliant food (at a good price)!! Staff really friendly and there is a great selection of booze!! definetly goin there again i recommend it.

we have eaten twice at this restaurant, excellent food & service, with an interesting wine list too.
The refurb is modern, with lots of personal items around which give the restaurant a family feel.
The owners are hands on which we love. Well done this area is in dire need of new exciting venue like The Swann

Cobham is a delightful village. I lived there as a girl in the 1970s, and we had a wonderful time going everywhere on out bicycles. It's a lovely bit of countryside right on the doorstep of London. I believe the house my family lied inis worth ten times what it was when we sold it in 1978. Real estate is very dear in Surrey.

Croydon is a brilliant place. The shopping and transport is the best in London and the south of the borough is truely spectacular with i t's golf courses and the North Downs of Surrey. Nobody can put Croydon down if they haven't been there!

Dorking has inevitably developed into a commuter settlement, but it is also a fine old country town with some characterful little shops, the town nearly surrounded by downland hills and with Box Hill northwards.

Nestling amidst the super Surrey Hills countryside, Dorking still retains all the features of a bustling market town. People have settled here since Roman times and many famous people were born here or lived in the surrounds including Laurence Olivier, Oliver Reed and Eric Clapton.
Historic West St is the centre of the renowned Antiques Centre and the ancient Kings Arms whilst Dickens stayed at the White Horse in the wide High St.
The surrounding countryside is truly stunning with Ranmore, Box Hill and Leith Hill ( the highest point in the South Esast of England ) the local high points. Westcott, Holmbury St Mary, Abinger, Brockham, Betchworth and leigh are all delightful villages with historic inns just perfect for a pint.

We have lived in Dorking now for about 4 years and absolutely love it. Hubbie is in to cycling and so the country here is perfect for him (and the 1000's of others who spend their weekends doing it) and our son has settled very well in to the local school. We moved from Putney in London and the contrast couldn't be greater. And despite the rural market town feel and the ability to go for a walk and not see a soul you can be in Central London in an hour

i live in Dorking and apart from not being able to find a local copper, and the late night revellers in dean street on a friday night it is a lovely little town. Admittedly the choice of shops is restricted by space and high costs. At least it is quite safe to walk in at night compared to larger towns. The schools are good and although the MVDC is trying to alter the area we still have some green areas left to enjoy.

I used to live in Dorking and it is a small but nicely formed country town with super countryside all around. there are lots of restaurants, pubs and antique shops and plenty of estate agents which reflect the affluence of the area. A lot of locals work in London and the commute takes around 45 minutes. Some of the surrounding villages like Brockham, Betchworth, Abinger, Capel and Mickleham are well worth a visit as is Box Hill which, along with Ranmore Hill, loom over the town.

Having lived and worked in haslemere i recommend it to anybody. Used to work at the prince of wales in hammervale, great country pub to visit. Nice locals good beers had some great nights here.
