Kinross is a burgh situated on the west shore of Loch Leven, Perth and Kinross, Scotland The town is a popular tourist resort offering many attractions and facilities. Kinross is an ancient town with many historically interesting features including the ruins of a Pictish Fort dating c490AD and the 14th century Loch Leven Castle both standing on the small Castle Island in Loch Leven. Loch Leven Castle has a rectangular, roofless but well-preserved tower-house with courtyard; it is well-known for being the prison of Mary Queen of Scott’s from 1567-8. Kinross House is on the east side of Kinross High Street. William Bruce bought the estate and completed the house in1693 it is a double pile plan combined with French detail. There is also 17th century Tolbooth steeple restored and rededicated Loch Leven is an important wildfowl reserve and angling centre famous for the unique Loch Leven Brown Trout. The town offers a variety of leisure activities including boat trips around the Loch and to Loch Leven Castle, fishing, an ice-rink, holiday accommodation and hotels. Kinross Market is a popular indoor market held every Sunday. The music festival T-in the Park is held over a weekend each July in the former Balado airfield.
