Born 1829. Died 1907 - Meteorologist and oceanographer.


Became secretary of Scottish Meteorolgical Society in 1860. Mainly responsible for establishing observatories at summit of Ben Nevis and near its base at Fort William. Produced first charts of storm tracks across Atlantic. In 1889 produced his major work Report on Atmospheric Circulation. First recipient of Symons Gold Medal.
