The hamlet of Hickstead is situated on the A23 roughly mid-way between Brighton & Crawley and 3 miles west of Burgess Hill. The name is probably derived from the Old English `heah or heghst - stede = high or highest place. Hickstead was a freehold manor of Saddlescombe - on the South Downs near to Brighton - which was controlled by the Order of St.John of Jerusalem (the Hospitallers). In the 13th century it was being run Matthew de Cumbe, the de Cumbes were still in control of the manor in the C15th; but by the end of the C16th the manor was acquired by the Stapleys of Twineham. Hickstead Place is a small two-storeyed manor house of brick with a Horsham slabbed roof. Most of the house is of the C18th but on the south wall is a C15th or early C16th chimneybrest with a brick gable and inside one part has a C15th roof. All remained quiet in Hickstead until 1960 when Douglas Bunn acquired Hickstead Place estate and set about building a show jumping course. He wanted to build a course to rival all the big arenas on the continent, his new course was built in a loop of the fledgling river Adur and has grown to become the home of International Show Jumping in Great Britain, and one of the best in the world, hosting numerous world class events. It now boasts five arenas, a polo field and is associated with all things equestrian as well as hosting many other non horse related events.
