Born 1631. Died 1700 - London Poet.


An English poet, his Heroic Stanzas (1658) on the death of Cromwell was followed by Astraea Redux (1660) celebrating the Restoration. In 1667 he published Annus Mirabilis , The year of Wonders 1666, which established him, and was appointed Poet Laureate in 1668. He also wrote comedies for the stage such as All for Love (1677). His final and best work was Fables, Ancient and Modern (1699).
