Ampthill is an ancient Market Town, set within a rural backdrop in Bedfordshire that’s home to 6,580 people. The town has many elegant Georgian buildings and a Market Square with a clock tower. Henry V111 was a frequent visitor in his day when he came for the Deer Hunting, he stayed at a castle that’s sadly no longer around, although the spot is marked by a stone cross. An interesting interlude is a visit to the 14th Century church of St Andrew, or perhaps on a grander scale Woburn Abbey is a magnificent 17th Century building that stands majestically in 3,000 acres of Deer Park, the sumptuous State Rooms has an impressive art collection including Canaletto. With three golf courses to test your skill, not to mention the wonders of the Animal kingdom within the Safari Park, what more could be wished for, perhaps a ride in a Swan Boat or journey on a steam railway well it’s all here. Or there is always Bedford Museum set beside the Ouse Embankment and tells an interesting story, the fabulous exhibits range from flint tools to Medieval wonders, or for the lovers of steam, the Irchester Narrow Gauge Railway Museum is set within Irchester Country Park and has 8 miles of walks to be enjoyed.
