Situated a short distance from Durham is the village of Brandon in County Durham, originally one of seven townships within the Parish of Brancepeth. Brandon was confiscated by Elizabeth I in 1569 after the northern rising and administered the lands as Crown Lands until the 1620’s where they were plundered by a series of Royal lessees and courtiers. In 1629 they were conveyed to the City of London when Charles I was forced to redeem his debts where they were subsequently broken up in a series of sales to merchants and financiers who in turn resold at high profits. Brandon Manor was the excepion, remaining in the hands of its London buyer. In 1796 William Russel, a retired coal owner from Tyneside, spent part of his fortune buying and restructuring Brancepeth Castle and re-purchased as much as possible of the old lordship. In 1806 he purchased the Brandon estate from the then Earl of Shaftesbury for £105,000. Once sparsely populated and agricultural the area became a populous mining district after collieries were established in the 1850’s when the area underwent dramatic change and it became a lucrative mining area for more than a hundred years. Coal mining finally ended at Brandon in March 1968
