The only coastal village in the Lake District National Park, Ravenglass provides a break and contrast from the hills and lakes of the region (though it is an excellent base for exploring the western side of the park), with a rich history and plenty of activities. On the estuary formed by three rivers, the Irt, the Mite, and the Esk, Ravenglass was for centuries a significant port. The Romans came to the town in 78 Ad, and for three centuries ‘Glennaventa’ was garrisoned by upwards of 500 Roman soldiers. The only substantial reminder of that epoch is Walls Castle, in fact the bath house the troops here enjoyed. For the Saxons and the Vikings this was a significant port too, indeed it remained so until the industrial age, shipping out the copper and iron ore and the slate and granite mined in the area. The port long ago silted up, but the narrow gauge railway that fed it remains. “Ratty”, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, has its western terminus at Ravenglass, and is a great way of getting to the walking country just inland – the villages of Eskdale Green and Boot are just two of the stops on the seven miles of line. Ravenglass was important enough for King John to grant it a market charter in 1208, but these days it is a quiet and picturesque place, with the white painted cottages typical of the region and sea-cobbles paving the main street. The town offers good game fishing from May through to October, trout giving way to sea trout and finally salmon through the months. Arrangements are available through local clubs. Other attractions in the area include Muncaster Castle and Muncaster Watermill, a working mill grinding grain with French burr stones.
