The little village of Frizington, just four miles from busy Whitehaven, is handily placed for those finishing (or setting out on) the C2C cycle route or coast to coast walk (the Stork Hotel at the edge of the village even ferries walkers to and from the route). It is also close to Ennerdale Water, the most westerly of the Lakes. Frizington is in farming country, although in the 19th century this was a district with iron and coal mining aplenty. But mining became uneconomic and ended around the turn of the century. The boom times, though, saw the building of the village church, a red sandstone structure typical of the late Victorian period (it was built in 1867), with an impressive stained glass window depicting the life of Christ. The village has the modern attraction of Rowrah carting track to its east, and to the west Whitehaven, scene of John Paul Jones’s raid in 1778, although whether this was a daring military escapade by the revolutionary war hero, or a drunken night for 30 crew-members at a tavern descending into violence and vandalism is debated by historians.
