The village of Dent sits somewhat detached from the rest of the hurried world, administratively part of Cumbria but still in the Yorkshire Dales, though distant from any of the larger settlements there too. Dentdale with the River Dee running through it is scenically outstanding farming country, the fields still full of the sheep that in past times provided the people of the area with the material for their knitting – gloves, socks and small garments were knitted by the hands of men and women throughout the valley, a second income for many struggling to make a living from the land. St Andrew’s church in Dent is Norman, though there have been many alterations, restorations and improvements over the centuries. The village with a population below 700 mainly comprises three cobbled streets, with solid stone cottages lining the steep inclines. At the heart of the village is the old Sun Inn, owned by the Dent Brewery that is located a few miles to the east in Cowgill. This micro-brewery was started in 1990, using its own spring water. It was one of the first of many in Cumbria, and now supplies various pubs in the area, including the two others in Dent, and sells bottled beers too, so its fame is spreading further afield. Cowgill is somewhat surprisingly where Dent Station is located, the highest railway station in the country, standing on the beautiful Settle – Carlisle line. Dent Viaduct nearby is built of huge blocks of locally quarried stone, its 10 arches spectacularly spanning 199 yards. The Dales are of course great walking country, and Dent is a good centre for exploring them. Kirkby Lonsdale with its Cathedral of the Dales is just eight miles to the south, and closer still is Sedburgh to the north, a place whose feeling of being apart from the world is in tune with Dent’s own.
