Carlisle is a cathedral city of some 72,000 inhabitants. Set in the north of Cumbria, of which it is the county city, Carlisle is just ten miles from the Scottish border, and much of its history is linked with that country. Long before the Romans arrived the area was held by the Brigantes, a tribe whose lands encompassed swathes of Northern England and up into Scotland. The Romans reached Carlisle in 72AD, building a wooden fort there, later using stone to improve it. They stayed in Carlisle until their withdrawal from Britain in the 5th century. Carlisle is a modern industrial city, and a transport hub, but it retains three major reminders of its medieval past: the castle; the cathedral, and the guild hall. The castle looms impressively as it has for approaching a millennium, but visitors today are welcome, able to view sights like the licking stones, where doomed and neglected Jacobite prisoners sought moisture to survive. The castle has its own exhibitions, and also houses the museum of the border regiment. The Guildhall provided rooms for eight medieval trade guilds, and is now a museum featuring items relevant to the eight trades. Carlisle Cathedral, founded by Henry II in 1122 as a priory, is a pleasing mix of the ancient and modern, seen particularly in the East Window, where 14th and 19th century combine. The ancient sandstone building was restored by the Victorians, and their legacy was augmented in the late 20th century with sculptures by Josefina de Vasconcellos Carlisle continues to link its past and its present, nowhere more spectacularly than in the Millennium Subway, physically connecting the castle and the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. The subway has industrial artefacts fixed into one wall, the names of reiver families who plagued the area with their banditry for all their romantic connotations carved in its granite pavement, and Gordon Young’s “Bishop’s Stone” piece, with part of the curse against the reivers promulgated by Gavin Dunbar, Archbishop of Scotland worked into its surface. There has been horseracing in Carlisle since the 16th century, and the course was radically improved with the Jubilee Grandstand opened in 2002, but with historic races like the Cumberland Plate still held, like the city itself the racecourse remains connected to its past.
