The popular market was established by Royal Charter in the 13th Century. Each October the town hosts a traditonal fair on the Market Place. One of the most famous organisations associated with the town is the Butterley Company who built St. Pancras Railway Station in London. In recent years the company produced the Falkirk Wheel, the world's first rotating boat lift.

Close to the town are a number of attractions including the Midland Railway - Butterley which offers a home to a diverse number of railway collections. There is the chance to travel on a seven mile trip through the Amber Valley countryside or visit the Country Park. To the south of the town is the Denby Pottery Visitor Centre with an opportunity to enjoy a factory or craftroom tour, a visit to the museum or browse through the factory shop. There are also additional shopping outlets at the Centre including Dartington Crystal and a superb cookery emporium and theatre. Population 20,000
