1759 - 1796. Scottish poet and songwriter
Son of a poor farmer but received literary education. Produced poetry on themes of love, lust and country life. Published famous Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect (1786). Worked on Scots Musical Museum editing and writing songs and music. Second farm failed while writing narrative poem Tam o’Shanter. Died of endocarditis induced by rheumatism and buried in Dumfries.
