Known as the historic capital of Mercia the historic village of Repton dates back to Anglo Saxon Times and is to be found in the Trent Valley between Derby and Burton on Trent. For those who appreciate architecture and those who want to have a glimpse through history then Repton is certainly a place that should be on your “must see” list. One of the most important and unique pieces of Saxon architecture still exists today in St Wystans Church, the crypt where many Saxon Kings were buried. Whilst the crypt dates back to around 750 AD and contains the tombs of King Ethelbald and King Wiglaf the original church was lain to ruin and rebuilt as seen today some 200 years later complete with its magnificent spire. In such a short space we can only provide a brief insight into this historic town, there is its world famous school, Repton School, first founded in 1557 and whose more recent past pupils include Roald Dahl - the children’s author, Graeme Garden, Adrian Newey – Formula 1 race engineer and journalist Jeremy Clarkson to name but a few. The area of the Church and the Cross are obvious landmarks however they are not lost within the 40 or so other buildings that form part of this Conservation Area all with historic or architectural merit making this a village worth visiting.
