Originally a Medieval centre of the cloth trade, the South-Eastern Devon market town of Honiton became famous for lace, pottery and glove making. It still has many shops dedicated to lace, even if it is no longer locally produced. Honiton lace was so well regarded in high circles, it was used in the wedding gown of Queen Victoria and the Christening robe of her first son, Edward, later Edward vii. An excellent collection of Honiton lace is on display at Allhallow’s Museum in the town. In more recent years, Honiton has become synonymous with antiques and antiquarian books, with many local establishments associated with this trade. Regular auctions are held in the town. Architecture in Honiton is modern in relative terms compared to other Devon sites, largely owing to fires which destroyed much of old Honiton in the 18th Century, much of the building work being post this date. It is a charming and prosperous place with a large modern shopping centre and two weekly markets. Accommodation caters for all needs and ranges from the luxury hotel to self catering cottages. Honiton is today set in largely agricultural country and is surrounded by many designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is evidence that this land has been inhabited since Neolithic times. The name is Anglo-Saxon and probably derived from “Hunas Ton”, The settlement of somebody called “Huna”. The nearby hill fort at Hembury Castle has been a fortified position since the Iron Age. There are several popular Honiton annual events including the Honiton Festival each May, featuring local musicians alongside internationally renowned artists and the Honiton Agricultural Show, one of the largest and best attended agricultural shows in the country. A thriving modern town, Honiton is also a gateway to some of the quieter retreats in Dartmoor and Exmoor.
