Jo Pavey is yet another successful athlete with a career stretching back into her youth. She had a very successful junior career as a runner and set the UK Under 15 1500m record in 1988 with time of 4:27.9. She set the best performances at the English Schools and AAA Under 15 Championships which remained unsurpassed until 2003 with the arrival of another junior talent, Emily Pidgeon.
She competed in both the 800m and 1500m at the AAA Championships, scoring doubles at both Under 15 and Under 17 level. It was only natural that a runner of such natural talent should make her Junior international debut at the age of only 15.
Pavey's senior debut came in 1997 at the World Championships in Athens but she was forced to miss the following two years due to injury. Once back in full fitness she ran a time of 15:18.51 on her 5000m debut in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics. In the Olympic final she ran under fifteen minutes for the first time in her career (14:58.27) to secure 12th overall. She had earned selection for the Sydney Olympics with a second place at the AAA Championship.
Her Olympic performance improved at the 2004 Olympic Games held in historic Athens in the 5000m discipline with a time 14.57.87, enough to secure overall 5th.
Medals started coming two years later in 2006 at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne when Pavey won silver over the 5000m distance. She followed this up with more success, this time at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka when she was placed 4th over 10000m. Other career highlights include winning the European Cup at 3000m in 2006 and then at 5000m in 2007.
Pavey is coached by husband Gavin and is a member of the Exeter Harriers. She is a qualified physiotherapist.
Jo Pavey was picked to represent Great Britain in the 5000 and 10000m disciplines at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in China.
