10 miles from Exeter at the North Eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park is the Devon village of Cheriton Bishop. It is largely a farming community with a growing number of daily commuters to nearby towns and Exeter city. The name Cheriton Bishop means “Church town”. The church of St. Mary is part Norman including the font from 1083, with mostly 15th Century reconstruction. It has some aspects of interest including remnants of a pre-Reformation screen depicting St. Dennis carrying his head, one of only two such pictures believed to be in existence. In the roof of the aisle is a carving of three rabbits with ears joined, a symbol of the Holy Trinity. Outside the church is what appears to be a large stone table. Farmers would have paid out wages to their workers here after Sunday service, thus ensuring they attended church. A point of local folklore is the Dancing Tree, or Twisted Oak, on the corner of Combe Lane. Boards were laid on the top and thirty people could dance accompanied by three fiddlers. Ghost stories abound in Cheriton Bishop and there is once said to have dwelled a white witch at the foot of Cheriton Hill.
