The town of Chagford in the heart of Devon shelters beneath a wooded hillside at the Northern edge of Dartmoor National Park. “Chag” Means gorse and there was originally only a ford across the river Teign. Settled for more than 4000 years, it became prosperous due to the tin trade and export of locally produced wool. The sanctuary of the 15th Century church of St. Michael has an inscription dedicated to Mary Whiddon, who was shot and killed on the church steps after her marriage in 1641 – believed to have provided R D Blackmore with the inspiration for “Lorna Doone”. Chagford is an attractive town with stone cottages and among the old thatched granite buildings is Endecott House dating from the 1500’s, named after one of the Pilgrim Fathers who became Governor of Massachusetts. In Chagford there are many excellent shops and places to stay, there is even an open air swimming pool. Close to Chagford is Gidleigh Park, A small country house hotel set in large private gardens and woodlands. Chagford affords access to many scenic hillside and moorland walks, fishing can also be enjoyed at the local Fernworthy Reservoir. The place to visit for the best of Devon.
