Berkhamsted is a popular town in the Chiltern Hills, has a population of 19,000 and is a conservation area. Located near Hemel Hempstead and surrounded by countryside, it is a commercially prosperous and affluent place. Many famous people are from here, namely John Cleese, Sarah Brightman and Graham Greene amongst others. It is currently the home of the British Film Institute's National Film and Television Archive. The town is set on the Grand Union canal, the stretch opened in 1798 and was the main route during the industrial revolution, linking London to the West Midlands. Historically Berkhamsted is important. It was where the crown of England was offered to William The Conqueror in 1066. The Rex cinema is a wonderful example of ornate art deco, originally opened in 1938 but closed in 1988 for major restoration to re-open in 2004 and still pulling in audiences today. Berkhamsted has a Norman castle, well worth a visit. It is near the train station and is mostly remains now but boasts a unique double moat. In the possession of English Heritage it is open all year. There are many walks in the area too. Ashlyns School is an impressive building, formerly a hospital. It’s chapel contains an organ once played by Handel. The Collegiate School was founded in 1541 with a celebrated author pupil, Graham Greene, whose father was also head teacher there. The town has what is thought to be the oldest shop in Britain, dating from about 1250. Allegedly a goldsmith’s but is now controversially an estate agent. The parish church of St Peter hails from the 13th century and is open to visitors daily. There is a weekly market still held on Saturdays, for which there is ample parking in Berkhamsted.
