Brother of Graham Greene. Studied at Merton College, Oxford. Joined the BBC in 1940 and worked on propaganda broadcasts to Germany. Rebuilt Germany’s peacetime radio service. Was BBC’s first director of news and current affairs, became director-general (1960-69) and was responsible for modernising the institution and competing with independent television.
