Wye is an historic village in Kent, located near Ashford. Its population of villagers is about 2,300 but was expanded by an additional 600 students who would come to study at Wye College, an agricultural college until 2005. The college was founded in 1447 and was part of the University of London and then Imperial College. In 2005 Imperial announced that Wye College would be converted into a research centre. However, following a campaign and the uncovering of a masterplan to sell the college and ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ land off for housing development, the plans were abandoned. A book on the campaign, SAVED, was published in April 2007. The building is currently used by the University of Kent. Wye is located at an ancient ford of the River Great Stour, and a Roman camp and villa once stood at the site. On the other side, there are remarkable views of ‘The Devil's Kneading Trough’ valley. Due west of the village on the Downs is a crown carved in the chalk by Wye College students in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII. Wye has several restaurants and pubs including The Wife of Bath and The Tickled Trout.
