Born 1640. Died 1689 - English writer and adventuress.


Brought up in Surinam, she met the enslaved African Prince Oroonoko, who became the subject for her novel Oroonoko (1688). She became a professional spy at Antwerp, sending political and naval information, but received little thanks, and on her return to England was arrested over debts. Regarded as the first professional woman author her restoration plays include The Forced Marriage (1670) and The Feigned Courtizans (1678).
