Pound Note Withdrawn from Circulation

Yes there were good reasons for the replacement of the £1 note by the £1 coin: the coin lasts far longer, avoiding the need for collection and destruction of notes; in that way it is also greener; and inflation meant the price of stuff from vending machines made a coin practical. But a note felt so much more like wealth than a coin does.
And nobody was fooled by the nickel-brass alloy: what was briefly called ‘the round pound’ didn’t feel or look like gold: a sovereign it is not.
But as of March 11 1988 the £1 note was no longer legal tender; the £1 coin introduced in 1983 replaced it. For those, however, who prefer a wad of cash to a severely damaged pocket Scotland, Jersey , Guernsey and the Isle of Man are the places to go – they still issue £1 notes there.
