Tidworth is an unusual garrison town positioned on the borders of Wiltshire and Hampshire, and is home to just over seven thousand people. It nudges the edge of Salisbury Plain, and is surrounded by a wild and dramatic landscape that spreads for miles. Originally two villages dating as far back as Neolithic times, and which also saw Bronze Age Settlers, and the building of an Iron Age Hill Fort nearby. The two villages one of which sat in the county of Wiltshire, and one in Hampshire, eventually merged, which saw the birth of the town. Farming and agriculture had been the main industry for centuries until the influx of military personnel who arrived in the early 19th Century, after which the Army built many buildings and houses for the soldiers and their families, this in turn led to the rise in businesses within the town. Today's visitor will discover a choice of shops on offer, several cafes within the town, and a collection of tempting takeaways to chose from. There are welcoming pubs which have stood the test of time, and, as visitors are never far from the network of footpaths which stretch across stunning countryside walkers will be spoilt for choice.
