Morecambe Bay is a large sandy bay in the north west of England, reaching from Walney Island in the north to Fleetwood in the south. It offers residents and visitors some spectacular views and remarkable sunsets across the Bay towards the Lake District. Between Walney Island and Fleetwood at the mouth of the Bay, and the coastline behind, is an area of 195sq miles. At extreme low tides 120sq miles are exposed as a sandy desert. It is the largest continuous intertidal area in Britain. The Bay is fed by five rivers - the Leven, the Kent, the Keer, the Lune and the Wyre and it is this bay that attracts “Twitchers” (birdwatchers) to come and watch the largest wader population in the UK a fact that is internationally recognised as it is designated a Special Protection Area for birds. In times long gone travellers to Cartmel and the Furness Peninsula used to cross the sands at Morecambe Bay rather than take the long way round, today there are organised Cross Bay Walks – the dangers of attempting this alone and without guidance cannot be underestimated and for this reason these walks must be undertaken with a qualified guide who can not only highlight the dangers but identify some interesting aspects of the walk. Guides have been used employed by the Duchy of Lancaster since 1536 and today they are there to make your trip enjoyable. Morecambe has plenty of other distractions to offer both resident and visitor, there is the Stone Jetty – the present one on the side of the former harbour built around 1835. IN the late 18th century there was a railway line from here to Hest Bank where it linked with the Lancaster Carlisle line and helped trade flourish in the area for a period. Dome people will still remember the harbour when it was used as a ship breakers giving employment to the local population in the 1920’s and 30’s. There are quiet gardens to enjoy around Happy Mount Park, or take a trip to the hustle and bustle of Morecambe’s markets, or simply take a stroll through the town and enjoy some of the Art Deco architecture that peppers the street scene.
