Bolton is a large town that has grown to have a population of around 261,000 people and is situated within the Greater Manchester area. The name Bolton comes from Bolt and Tun. le-Moors is merely a description of the land which surrounds Bolton (moorland). In its heyday as an industrial town its skyline was a forest of chimneys most of which served the textile industry and for which Bolton was a world-renowned centre. Bolton is easily accessed from along the A666 which to the South connects with the M61 leading on the main North West motorway network. Access to the regional and national road and rail system can be gained easily with Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds all lying within commuting distance. For entertainment Bolton offers a diverse nightlife. A range of pubs and clubs are all easily accessible once in the town centre as are restaurants and Bolton’s three theatres, The Albert Halls, The Octagon and The Bolton Little Theatre each with its own particular speciality of show. For those who prefer their theatre to be pure Hollywood then Bolton has two multi-screen cinemas –a UGC Cinema at The Valley on Eagley Brook Way or a Vue Cinema Middlebrook Leisure Park in Horwich which is around a mile away. Bolton currently boasts The Valley, a relatively new leisure park and as well as the cinema also offers an Esporta Leisure club providing the latest in high tech fitness regimes as well as the Atlantis nightclub whilst in Bolton itself there are at least half a dozen other nightclubs. Also out of town is Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park – probably most famous as home to the Reebok Stadium and Bolton Wanderers FC, as well as housing a multi screen 24 hour cinema it also has a Hollywood Bowl – a 26 lane computerised super highway for ten pin bowling fanatics.

Retail shopping is well catered for in Bolton with not just the out of town retail parks but also Bolton’s town centre which offers a wide variety of shopping centres and markets much of the shopping area is pedestrianised. Bolton boasts two markets one adjacent to Moor Lane Bus Station and known (quite reasonably) as Bolton Market, and the other, is the Market Hall, a cast iron and glass roofed Victorian market which is still thriving today as much as it did in Victorian times. Due to the nature of the history of Bolton and its surrounding towns Bolton has a number of Mill and Factory outlets. For those who take their leisure more seriously then there are a number of parks to visit and enjoy including Smithills Country Park which is set in some 2,000 acres of woodland, farmland and moorland as well as the more formal Queens park located on Chorley New Road which, as well as parkland, also offers a range of sporting areas for football, tennis, lake and children’s play area.
