The market town of Spalding is situated in the South Holland district of Lincolnshire. It has a population of about 22,000 and lies next to the River Welland. Every year the town hosts the very popular Spalding Flower Parade, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2008. The tulip parade is a celebration of the local flower industry and it attracts a large number of visitors each year. The origins of settlement in Spalding dates back at least to Roman times, when the Spalding Marshes were used for salt production. A Benedictine Priory was built in 1015 and the town appeared in the 1086 Doomsday book as 'Spallinge'. The most famous building in Spalding is Ayscoughfee Hall, a 15th century country house which has been converted into a museum and tourist information centre. Other local attractions include the Pinchbeck Engine Museum (just north of Spalding), the Springfields Shopping Outlet and Gardens, the Bulb Museum and the Gordon Boswell Romany Museum. The area is also famous for its parish churches; St Paul's at Fulney was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, the designer of St Pancras Station London. Sir George was a friend of the Spalding Gentlemen's Society. Spalding Parish Church itself dates from the 12th century and has a handsome spire visible for miles around
