Frank Pick

Pick qualified as a solicitor, but it wasn’t a career that he wished to follow. Instead he began to work in the railway industry, first in a statistics office, then as an assistant to the managing director of the NER, whom he followed to the company running much of London’s underground railways. Pick rose through the ranks in that organisation and those into which it evolved. He is revered for having built up the underground as a brand, modernising its systems, and for the design elements he introduced that remain recognizable today – station architecture, the roundel, and artworks by firdt-raters like Gill and Epstein.
