The riverside suburb of Woolwich is steeped in military history, and visitors flock to see the sights and soak up information in the various museums. Located in south-east London, Woolwich is split by the Thames, with the smaller part residing on the north bank. Ferries and a foot tunnel travel between the two sides, each with its own great attractions. The North Woolwich district of Silvertown is home to the Thames Barrier Park, a 22-acre wonderland of greenery, gardens, trees and courtyards which provides lots of fun for children while the grown-ups enjoy exceptional views of the Thames Flood Barrier, a magnificent feat of engineering. Also in North Woolwich is the Old Station Museum, with exhibits pertaining to the local railway. On the south bank, Firepower - The Royal Artillery Museum (situated inside the gates of the historic Royal Arsenal) offers an unforgettable interactive experience for the family, recreating the sights and sounds of explosions and weaponry, helped by a team of actors. Meanwhile, the Greenwich Heritage Centre, in Woolwich, explains the history of the area, with special reference to the Royal Arsenal. Bargain-hunters will enjoy Woolwich's age-old market, and golfers are close to two courses, at Shooters Hill and Thamesview.
