Willesden, a busy district of north-west London, is known for a cosmopolitan population that includes a loyal Irish community. Once a destination for pilgrims visiting the shrine of the Black Virgin at St Mary's Church, Willesden was a countryside settlement until the railway came in 1879. Today, a church of the same name remains on the site, and visitors can take home samples of holy water from a spring flowing underneath. The atmosphere of Willesden is coloured by the past, with many Edwardian and Victorian houses, some converted into flats. These are much in demand among families and young professionals as well as people moving to this more affordable area from expensive neighbourhoods. Small shops and grocery stores are much in evidence too alongside the usual high-street brand names and an assortment of boutiques, bars and restaurants. The old library has been refurbished as a home for Brent Museum, a bookshop and a cinema showing both mainstream and foreign films. Also new is Willesden Sports Centre, a multi-million pound facility. Outdoor sports including tennis are available at Gladstone Park, a formal Victorian district park which also offers gardens, a duck pond, a wildlife area, an art gallery and a café.
