The east-London district of West Ham is currently being regenerated along with other areas in Newham borough, which is preparing to host the 2012 Olympics. West Ham is close to Stratford, home of the new Olympic Stadium, but it also provides easy access to the world-class attractions of central London. Locally, the Green Flag-winning West Ham Park is a much-loved open space, attracting a million visitors a year. In 2005, it was voted Best Park in the South East in a nationwide competition, making an impression with its 77 acres of gardens and recreation grounds as well as sports facilities, guided tours, bandstand entertainment, a plant nursery and reassuring safety features. The area is also well known for its football club, West Ham United, whose home turf, Boleyn Ground, is located in neighbouring Upton Park. After unsuccessful negotiations to move into the Olympic Stadium after the Games, the club looks set to transfer to a new site in the future. For the time being, however, fans may enjoy staying at the Quality Hotel West Ham, which overlooks the pitch. The hotel and ground are in Green Street, another great attraction with its multicultural shops and restaurants and the colourful Queen's Market.
