The eyes of the world will be on Stratford, east London, when it hosts the Olympic Games in 2012. In the run-up to the Games, Stratford - the location of the Olympic Stadium - is undergoing a dramatic transformation as it rises to meet the occasion. A new station, Stratford International, has been constructed at the heart of what will be an ambitious development covering acres of railway land - a whole new town called Stratford City. This is described as "a 21st Century idea responding to the expectations and ambitions of 21st Century people", and the planners are determined that "old" and "new" Stratford will be fully integrated. The four districts of Stratford City, with distinctive modern design and landscaping, will provide shopping and leisure centres, hotels, conference halls, offices, houses, flats, community facilities, schools, open spaces, water features and at least part of the Olympic Village. The existing town of Stratford - a former country village - has already enjoyed regeneration in recent years with an influx of home-buyers and high street stores. The Stratford Centre is a major shopping destination, and there is excellent cultural provision at Stratford Circus, a performing arts centre, and the long-respected Theatre Royal.
