Gerard Manley Hopkins

Educated at Balliol College at the height of the Oxford Movement Hopkins eventually, inevitably, became a Roman Catholic and studied for the priesthood, taking orders in 1877. He taught for a time at Stoneyhurst in Lancashire before being appointed as Professor of Greek at University College, Dublin. It is, however, not as a scholar but a poet that he is now remembered, though not a single poem by Hopkins was published in his lifetime. Robert Bridges brought his friend’s work to the world’s attention after Hopkins died of typhoid fever aged just 44, its internal rhymes and sprung rhythms bringing a musical beauty to match that of his imagery.
